It’s finally Spring and time to add a little color to your life!

Spring is here – finally! Here in the Northeast, it’s been a LONG winter – I thought it was just me, being a transplanted Southerner, but everyone I talk to comments on how the winter has dragged on and on. As I look out my window everyday; I see more and more color outside, which makes me want to brighten up inside as well.

Our kids are ready for playing outside all day and dining al fresco every chance they get. I’ve been Spring Cleaning both inside and out, getting rid of clothes and toys we’ve outgrown. On the list this weekend are cleaning our patio furniture and weeding our flower beds. My husband put in a fabulous tree swing last Fall which attracts a lot of kids in the neighborhood and has wreaked havoc on our lawn. We’ll be aerating our lawn this weekend as well, so we can seed and fertilize in hopes of a lush, green lawn – that’s a hard one to fill since our yard seems to be the neighbor hood playing field.

Since our thoughts are turning to dining outside, I have been looking for non-breakable trays, plates and other accessories. DIY Classroom Valentine’s

Okay folks, it’s down to the wire – you can’t email your children’s classmates their valentine cards – so what’s a Mom (or Dad) to do when you’re empty-handed? Our Valentine’s Day Tradition

There always seems to be so much pressure out on Valentine’s Day as this big, romantic night – flowers, chocolates, a romantic meal followed by an even more romantic night with your loved one. Maybe my husband and I are the most unromantic couple in the universe, but our Valentine’s Day tradition is going out for a burger. We’re burger people to begin with, but we started this tradition by accident 11 years ago.

We were driving from New York City to Boston for one of my close friends’ weddings. We left after work, just in time for Friday afternoon rush hour as we got hungrier and hungrier; our only option was a McDonald’s at a rest stop along I-95 near Darien, CT. We went in and as we were eating our dinner with lots of other kids and families, it dawned on me that it was Valentine’s Day – giving Ed a wee bit of a hard time, I told him that I would get to tell all my friends that he took me to McDonald’s for Valentine’s Day. It was then we decided that we would buck the commercialization of Valentine’s Day and a great burger would be how we would celebrate each year – and it’s been that way now for 11 years!

Football, Basketball and every sport in between

My 6 year old son Mac is OBSESSED with sports. When he was younger, we couldn’t get him to participate in any kind of sport, but over last summer, a switch was flipped and he is ALL SPORTS all the time. Fall was all about Football – he preferred front yard football with his Dad to playing on the organized flag football team (which tends to be a little on the serious side).

Every weekend, there is a passel of kids who hang out at our house playing football (and waiting for my husband to play with them). Every night, he and my husband would practice “patterns” in our living room – much to my chagrin – but, so far nothing has been broken.

He’s more interested in doing than learning, so the only way we could get him really interested in math was talking about sports scores on an NFL app we have – that really kept his attention and he’d be happy to share with you how many teams won more than 8 games this year.

Now that the college football season is over and the NFL season is waiting for its swan song next week, his attention has turned to basketball. High School basketball (he got to inspect the ball at our local HS game last week), college basketball and the NBA. He doesn’t really have a favorite team yet – he waffles between the 76ers, who is his Dad’s favorite team, the NY Knicks, since we live in New York, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Thunder because his favorite current player is Kevin Durant and the Chicago Bulls because that’s where Michael Jordan played.

Mac is never at a loss for words and is able to talk about teams, plays, dunks and everything in between and always wants to know who your favorite player is, who had the best dunk and what was the best play of the game – all while re-enacting each one. His enthusiasm is charming and I hope he doesn’t lose it.

He got really excited last week when he wandered in my office and saw me working on an email template for the Thunder – I think it’s the only time that my job has ever resonated with him – but he was pumped that I was designing email skins for the NBA. Now he wants to start sending email with his own personalized NBA email backgrounds – maybe I can use this to help out with his spelling!
